Challenges in the Shipping Industry
Rev. July 7, 2021
Dear Draper Partner,
We have all heard that the shipping industry is currently struggling to deliver the goods.
The big issue is labor. It’s not only a driver shortage—shortages of dock, warehouse and office employees are also slowing down delivery. Big box stores have a backlog of full trailers at their distribution centers, so the carriers don’t have the extra trailers they need to work efficiently at their terminals.
Your shipments are important to us. Here are some specific details about the delivery of Draper products.
Transit times – Delivery schedules are extended across the LTL industry. If delivery/installation dates are important or have a high financial implication, please consider using a guaranteed service. Even these may be delayed, but you will have better information and more control. Ask for a quote if you are considering this service.
Rising rates – Rates are rising quickly. Draper will honor previously quoted freight rates, but future freight quotes will be subject to change.
Carrier options - Some carriers are placing embargoes on long freight. Old Dominion, which has been one of our primary carriers, will no longer accept packages over 96” long. Most of our shipments include long freight. As a result, we are currently shifting our business to different carriers, including ABF, Ceva, and others. In some cases we may not be able to honor your standing carrier request.
Additional accessorials – Many extra fees are being charged for special services. If you need any service that requires extra effort from the carrier, there may be a fee associated with it.
Consumer buying – The switch to e-commerce that began with the pandemic is continuing in 2021. Demand for delivery services is at an all-time high and will likely remain high through the Christmas holiday season.
Changes will happen – The shipping and logistics industry worldwide is in a time of rapid change. We will work with you to find the best way to serve your customers’ needs.
As always, we thank you for your ongoing loyalty and business. If you have questions about your order shipment, you can reach out to your sales representative at https://www.draperinc.com/contactus/.
