Desert Edge High School - Phase 2

Certification Level: Silver
Desert Edge was recently certified as one of the most environmentally friendly high school projects in the United States. It earned a Silver LEED rating — only the fifth high school in the world to be so honored — from the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
The high school's sustainable features include an improved building envelope with high-performance glass; motion and daylight sensors to reduce artificial lighting use; carbon dioxide sensors that shut off the fan coil when the rooms are unoccupied; an Energy Star®-rated roofing system; low-emitting adhesives, sealants, and paints; and agri-fiber board for cabinetry with no or low formaldehydes.
As a result, the school is 28% more energy efficient than a conventionally designed high school, which translates into a $58,000 energy cost saving each year. Its plumbing fixtures save one million gallons of water each year. In addition, 84% of the construction waste produced on the job was diverted from the landfill.

Hermitage Elementary School

Certification Level: Certified
Hermitage Elementary School is a primary educational facility for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, designed to accommodate up to 750 K-5 grade children.
In order to provide a comfortable environment for the students, faculty, and staff, protecting and verifying the facility’s indoor air quality (IAQ) was of utmost importance during construction. The health and well being of the children is also enhanced through careful material selection; permanent CO 2, temperature, and humidity monitoring; and increased airflow, exceeding ASHRAE standards.
